A FINE CHINESE TENG PAI TIGER SHIELD
Description
A very rare Qing Dynasty example of characteristic circular form. Conical, with flattened rim, it is composed of rows of rattan-wrapped withes, each bound to the next with narrower strips. The obverse painted with well-known attacking tiger with black, white, red and green on a yellow ground, surmounted by the Chinese character “Wang” or king. The reverse with original rattan and wood grips, one grip strengthened or repaired during its working life. Early 19th century. The Imperial Tigerman Corps, infantry which served to break cavalry charges, was known for its use of tengpai and saber. Image shown for reference only, it is not included in this lot.
