Description
A massive example, the exceptional chiseled hilt with pommel wrought as a fully modeled, finely detailed lions head with upraised claws and cascading mane, the features, tongue and fangs well delineated. The large recurved guard with ring guard chiseled with scrolling leaves and terminating in a small lions head. The massive saber blade long and lightly curved, triple fullered and tapering toward the clipped tip, and struck at each forte with Genoese sickle marks and stars. In its later leather-covered wooden scabbard. 17th century. Worn. Overall length 100cm./ 39 3/8 inches. Condition III
