Description
The steel hilt retaining the form of the famed cuphilt rapier, or espada de ropera, with cup and knucklebow now combined, and recurved guard retained by an aperture in the cup. The cup, guard, knucklebow and pommel elaborately chiseled throughout in complex baroque motifs, the grip with fine steel twisted wire wrap and profiled ferrules. The fine, straight, double-edged blade of hexagonal form, elaborately etched with numerous cabalistic and alchemical symbols between pairs of man in the moon signs to each side. Second half of the 18th century. Minor wear. Overall length 89cm./ 35 1/16 inches. Condition III
