Description
The hilt and belt parts wrought entirely of silver and decorated en suite: engraved, nielloed and parcel gilded in characteristic motifs, comprising half of the large, lobed pommel and the nearly intact scabbard locket, together with an additional circular mount possibly originally attached to the scabbard and 33 mounts which appear to compose a complete belt, and an Arab coin dating 9th-10th century, together with the fine, virtually straight, broad blade of flattened wedge section with reinforce to the forte and pronounced and superbly modeled yelman with sharpened back-edge, and lightly bowed guard with rhombus-form ecusson and knobbed quillon terminals. 9th-10th century. Very good excavated condition, losses to edge and guard, locket lacking upper edge, mounts scratched and encrusted, Arab coin with partial loss to rim. Found at Szabolcs, Hungary in the 1880s. Overall length 88cm. Condition V
