Description
An Ottoman tilsimli gomlegi, of characteristic T-form handwoven of linen, the sides expanding toward the hem. Finely painted in symmetrical panels of black, blue, red and green, containing superbly calligraphed quotations from Qur?an in sulus (thulth, ) including Allah! Muhammad!, the 99 Names of God and the Shahada. 19th-20th century. Minor signs of wear. Such shirts, worn in battle, provided spiritual protection. Length from nape to hem 107.5cm / 42 1/3?.
