Likely made in Naples, of shell type, the guard formed of two large, domed oval plates, the obverse chiseled with a lion amongst foliage, the panels connected by loops which connect the guard, knucklebow and quillons, both with en suite bead terminals. Wooden grip with spirally-twisted wire wrap retaining its turkshead knots, terminating in a pommel of flattened spherical form engraved en suite with the guard. The long, double-edged blade of flattened hexagonal section with a narrow central fuller running for a quarter of its length at either forte, struck XX IHN SOLINGEN XX on each side. First half of the 17th century. Tip slightly rounded, isolated areas of minor pitting. Overall length 115 cm / 41 ??. Condition II
