The armor Dani People, of characteristic form. The core formed from the inner bark of a tree, and tightly knotted over in continuous figure-eight technique with orchid vine, which also contributes the yellow and brown tones of the upper section. Connecting at the shoulders by means of cords. With good patina overall. From a collection formed in the 1960s. The axe of Mount Hagen type, the deep gray stone head finely hand-ground, bound to the naturally-tapering wooden branch haft with pigmented fiber. With excellent patina. Both late 19th-20th century. Overall length of axe 73.5cm/ 29 inches. Condition II
