A RARE OTTOMAN MARTINI-PEABODY RIFLE
Description
Stocked in walnut, elaborately relief-carved at the butt with Ottoman stands of arms and intricately inlaid throughout with fine Ottoman vinework and borders in silver wire. A rare cavalry carbine, with short barrel, fitted with but two sling rings and made without provision for a bayonet. Functional mechanism. Retains its leather shoulder sling. C. 1877. Light wear overall, silver uncleaned. These weapons saw extensive use in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877. Carbines, especially those displaying a sophisticated level of embellishment, are very rarely encountered. Overall length 96.2cm./ 37 7/8inches. Condition III
