A RARE DAHOMEY AMAZON SWORD
Description
Of characteristic form, the hilt with polished hardwood grip and profiled brass guard. The robust, handwrought blade single-edged with stamped spine. 19th century. The Amazons of Dahomey were admired and respected throughout the world. Both French and British visitors to the Kingdom of Dahomey wrote of their bravery, skill in battle and stature in the kingdom. Note that the Amazons in the last photo c. 1900 wear swords of the same form, particularly far right and second right. PHOTO NOT INCLUDED WITH THIS LOT. Overall length 57cm / 22 1/2 inches.
