Description
A seldom-encountered sea captains sword, showing the superb skill of Boka Kotorska smiths. The distinctive Adriatic form of hilt found from the Serbian coast south to Epiros, wrought entirely of silver, deeply chiseled and nielloed throughout, the guard likewise of silver, with characteristic rolled and cusped quillons. The 16th century Italian heirloom blade straight and double-edged, of a length particularly useful aboard sailing ships. In its leather-covered wooden scabbard with large locket and chape of finely embellished silver en suite with the hilt, the reverse of the locket with hinged toggle and inscribed 1789 together with two Serbian characters. Dated 1789. Blade with minor areas of pitting. Overall length 75.7cm./ 29 51/64 inches. Condition II
