Description
Enterprising German manufacturers saw the enormous popularity of the machete—from the simple American Collins to the fine Cuban Guanabacoa- throughout the Spanish colonies in the latter 19th century and began to produce dedicated weapons for this market. This is a fine example of the type, the german silver hilt elaborately embellished with rococo motifs, the pommel a fully-modeled cougar with inlaid eyes attacking a snake, the grip with mother of pearl panels inlaid in engraved brass. The well-tempered blade of characteristic form, parallel edged with angled tip, and struck at the forte, LUCKHAUS & GUNTHER REMSCHEID WARRANTED TESTED, together with a lamb bearing a banner and the number 87 (1887?) Showing sharpening marks, some edge intact. In its matching tooled leather scabbard with fine engraved locket and chape, the chape also pierced and displaying its original red velvet backing. C. 1880. Blade stamps showing wear. Overall length 76.3cm./ 30 1/8 inches. Condition III
