Description
Rarely encountered, comprising a massive two-piece buckle and six large mounts, all of solid silver and each pierced, profiled, engraved and nielloed en suite, mounted on a broad waistband covered entirely in silk black velvet with heavily gilt embroidery. Latter 19th century. Light wear. For centuries the Central Asian Khanates observed specific sumptuary laws which persisted until the early 20th century. These governed the quality of garments and accoutrements one could wear based upon his station. Honor belts such as this were typically presented by the Khan or Amir to ministers and members of court who had distinguished themselves in battle. They represented recognized rank badges, thus those who purchased one privately and dared to affect it in public were subject to stringent penalties. Overall length 97.8 cm / 38.5 inch . Condition I
