Description
An example of superior baroque craftsmanship produced in the Ottoman Court Workshops. The grip of gilded silver, expanding continuously to the pommel and of hexagonal section intricately engraved, the pommel set with a ruby or garnet. The elaborately-modeled guard likewise of gilded silver, pierced, chiseled and engraved, the quillons formed as fully-modeled vines with recurved ends framing the scallop shell-shaped ecusson, bearing a tughra stamp to one side. The velvet-covered wooden scabbard with large gilded silver locket decorated en suite with the hilt in fine embossed and chased baroque motifs and sash loop. The straight, well-wrought blade double-edged with pronounced central ridge, wrought of intricately-patterned Persian black wootz. Beginning of the 18th century. Very minor wear, gilding rubbed, blade with slight pitting. Overall length 39cm / 15 ¼ inches. Condition III
