Description
A rare Safavid era example, with broad, robust crescent blade and stepped poll with hammer peen. In place of the typical spike is a unique finial composed of the Arabic characters forming the name of the hero Ali, with fully modelled ain and lam, and the curve of the blade itself forming the yaa. This finial unscrews to reveal a long thrusting spike. The steel haft with button terminal. First half of the 17th century. Minor wear, traces of gilding to finial. Overall length 78cm/ 30 ¾ inches.
