Description
Likely German or Flemish, of pressed cow horn, incised with a horseman attacking a man on foot, both wearing helmets and armor and bearing swords amongst trees with a pair of arches in the background, the reverse with a series of concentric circles. Mounted in copper with integral suspension rings, the adjustable spout with sprung cutoff later. 16th-17th century. Well worn, copper patinaed. Overall length 34cm/ 13 3/8 inches. Powderhorns were often mounted in copper because it is non-ferrous and therefore could not strike a spark if jarred. Condition IV
