Description
A rare example, the body composed of thick layers of hardened hide reinforced by a broad, circular riveted brass rim, together with a faceted conical central boss and eight circular plates with dentated edges all attached to the body with steel split pins. The reverse with encircling iron rod reinforcement and original leather knuckle pad and woven grip. 19th century. Minor wear overall. Such bucklers were used for fighting on foot in close quarters or on shipboard, not just for blocking blows but as offensive weapons in conjunction with swords, daggers or short spears. Overall length 22.5cm/ 8 7/8 inches. Condition III
