Description
Of characteristic form, the hilt wrought of brass, with polished hardwood grip. The robust, handwrought blade single-edged with chiseled fuller. In its leather-covered wooden scabbard with brass mounts. 19th century. The Amazons of Dahomey were admired and respected throughout the world. Both French and British visitors to the Kingdom of Dahomey wrote of their bravery, skill in battle and stature in the kingdom. Note that the Amazons in the last photo c. 1900 wear swords of the same form, particularly far right and second right. PHOTO NOT INCLUDED WITH THIS LOT. Leather well worn. Overall length 74.7cm / 29.5 inches. Condition III
