Description
A rare example of characteristic form. The horn grips with rolled pommel, brass tangband and guard with long quillons and langets. The wooden scabbard covered in blue velvet with brass mounts and opposed suspension rings. The blade of a distinctive type exported by the Ottomans throughout the Mediterranean, short, and parallel edged for much of its length, with narrow fullers and a T-back which expands into a broad, back-edged tip. Beginning of the 18th century. Well-worn overall. Blades of this form are often found in Islamic naval sabers. The scabbard mounts decorated in punchwork with Greek motifs, a pentas flower surmounted by a crown with a cross at the center, and a hexafoil, likewise crowned, suggesting the sword was captured by a Greek mariner.
