Description
Gurian People of Western Georgia, the distinctive horn hilt with octagonal grip and rectangular pommel of typical form with filigreed silver bosses and Imperial Russian silver coins to the reverse. The broad, parallel-edged blade with obtuse tip, finely forged with double central fullers to either side wrought with complex pattern-welded twistcore damascus and struck with four makers marks inlaid in gold (one lacking.) In its velvet-covered wooden scabbard with filigreed silver mounts engraved silver suspension band, with characteristic large profiled and pierced steel chape. First half of the 19th century. Minor wear. Overall length 53cm/ 18 ¾ inches. Condition III
