Description

A fine and rare example of the artistry and skill of Tiflis masters. The persiform hilt with steel guard and pommel, both heavily inlaid in characteristic gold motifs, with a central lion amongst vinework. The broad, straight blade tapering symmetrically toward the tip, but single-edged, reminiscent of early Arab swords. Forged with four narrow fullers and engraved with the running wolf mark often found on fine Georgian blades. In its tooled leather-covered scabbard with gold-inlaid mounts en suite with the hilt. First half of the 19th century. Minor wear, leather repairs to grip and scabbard, areas of pitting to blade, gold rubbed in spots. Overall length 97.2cm/ 38 ¼ inches. Condition III
