Description

A fine example of the type, known in Russian as the shashka s’ yubkoi, the hilt wrought entirely in silver, with canted grip with hooked pommel with nielloed decoration and beaded silver wire grip wrap. The broad, straight, blade with triple fullers along the spine and clipped tip, struck at the left forte with addorsed gurda (dentated sickle) marks and three points in triangular configuration to either side. The wooden scabbard with long, canted opening covered in red velvet designed to take in the grip to the pommel, supported by a large silver suspension band nielloed and engraved and set with a belt ring, separated by a band of brown leather from the second suspension band, likewise of nielloed and engraved silver and mounted with a belt ring. From the lower suspension band depends a long leather panel which expands continuously to its end near the tip of the scabbard in the form of a skirt, set with four nielloed silver buttons on the obverse and seamed at the reverse. The remainder of the scabbard is covered in red velvet and mounted with a nielloed silver chape. First half of the 19th century. Overall wear, velvet rubbed, leather skirt crazed, with losses to the edge. Blade with areas of pitting. Overall length 93.6cm/ 37 7/8 inches. Condition IV
