Description
A large, variegated cowhorn, from dark brown and black at the faceted and ringed spout to primarily blond throughout. Exquisitely incised with naturalistic flowering vinework interspersed between figures of a Scottish Highland warrior in profile with feathered bonnet, plaid, sporran and kilt, together with a baskethilted broadsword in low guard, and a maiden, likewise in Highland garb, lovely, with pensive expression, holding a different species of flower in each hand. The dark wooden cap affixed with nails and decorated with three leaves visible through age darkening. Mid-19th century or later. Showing good patina and minor worming and wear. Scottish Romanticism was popular for much of the early 19th century. Overall length 39cm./ 15 1/3 inches. Condition II
