Description
The hilt of characteristic form, likely Turkmen work, with much original grip leather intact, with faceted steel pommel and guard, the massive heirloom Persian blade exceptionally broad and wrought of very fine patternwelded damascus steel of a contrast and complexity sufficient to appear as Kara Taban wootz. In its velvet-covered wooden scabbard with steel mounts. 18th ? 19th century. As found. The Turkmen represented a bulwark against Imperial Russian expansion into Central Asia during the 19th century. They fought into the 20th century, against Persians, Russians and others. From the collection of a distinguished retired Lt. Colonel in the American Army, acquired while stationed in Afghanistan in 2008-9. Overall length 90cm / 35 15/16 inches. Condition V
