Description
A rare example with karabela hilt, the fine elephant grips with characteristic peaked pommel set with three turquoises on each side, the tangband and guard with rolled quillons terminating in dragons heads lavishly inlaid with gold vinework. The fine, long, broad, blade quite straight, with gradually continuous tapered cutting edge to the acute tip, forged of fine Persian wootz visible over much of the surface, and chiseled with three cartouches at the right forte, the upper reading, O JUDGE OF NEEDS, the central chiseled with the famous lion-symbol of Assad Allah, the lowest inscribed, YA QAYYUM! (O Creator!) In its velvet-covered wooden scabbard with en suite gold-inlaid steel suspension bands and engraved brass chape. 17th-18th century.
