Description
Mughal work, the grip a single large section of elephant, with fine, well-carved, fully-modeled horsehead pommel complete with finely-detailed bridle, the garnet eyes inlaid in silver. The base with gallery motif typical of 17th century Mughal work. The guard wrought entirely of silver, with bands of deeply embossed flowering vinework supporting a detailed lionhead at each ecusson together with quillon terminals likewise fully-modeled lionheads. The fine, long, massive blade of moderate curvature, forged of fine Persian Kara Taban black wootz as well as its hardened edge. In its leather-covered wooden scabbard with en suite embossed and engraved suspension bands and chape. 17th century. Minor losses to hilt, edge nicked, leather rubbed. Overall length 101.2cm./ 39 7/8 inches Condition II
