Description
A rare example of the type strongly associated with the Ponti, or Black Sea Greeks, the horn grip of typical form with large rectangular pommel and ferrule with finely engraved and nielloed mounts and octagonal grip. The broad, parallel-edged blade with tapering point, forged with a pair of central fullers with etched damascus design to either side and struck with a maker’s mark. The velvet-covered wooden scabbard with large engraved and nielloed silver two-piece locket, suspension band and chape decorated en suite with the hilt. The locket loose, revealing a Greek-language document beneath. First half of the 19th century. Minor wear to silver, blade with areas of pitting. Overall length 41.8cm./ 16 ? inches. Condition III
