Description
The massive hilt of steel, well-pierced and chiseled in imbricated panels with baroque borders, the quillon and knucklebow each wrought with a large central bead, terminating at the robust pommel showing en suite decoration. The profiled grip retainS its original twisted wire wrap and turkshead knots. The exceptionally long, double-edged blade of flattened diamond section with short, deep fuller to either side of the forte struck SAHAGUM to the right, (i.e. SAHAGUN, a city in N. Spain noted for fine blades) with an illegible makers name to the left. 17th century. Cleaned, minor pitting, interesting period copper braze repair to guard. Overall length 124.1cm./ 48 7/8 inches. Condition III
