Description
Edo era, composed of a fine large conch shell fitted with a brass mouthpiece secured by pitch. Retains its suspension cord. 18th-19th century. The Horagai was the all-important horn of war during the centuries leading up to and including the Edo era. It signaled advances, retreats and troop movements and was revered for its importance on the battlefield, as well as in Buddhist and Shinto ceremonies. Overall length 35cm./ 13 ? inches. Condition I
