Description
Seldom encountered, Polish or Hungarian work of classic form, the mounts comprising a distinctive brass pommel cap with handwrought knuckle chain and symmetrical steel guard, the long quillons with expanded terminals and langets. The hardwood grip with distinctive boot-shaped pommel covered in tooled leather. The robust, finely forged and single-edged blade with narrow fuller and back edge, struck at the forte with a makers mark flanked by clusters of four x-shaped stars. In its leather-covered wooden scabbard with profiled brass mounts pierced with hearts, each retaining its scarlet cotton lining and held by a series of four embossed brass bands, with two suspension rings Late 16th century. Overall wear, minor rubbing to leather, blade with areas of darkening. Overall length 89.5cm./ 35 ? inches. Condition III
