Description

The massive kinnoto was popular with those samurai who supported the return to power of Emperor Komei, as opposed to those who continued to support the Shogun Yoshinobu. It was used primarily on the front lines, where its sweeping blows were particularly effective in breaking up cavalry charges. The length and weight of the blade only allowed it to be swung two-handed. The long, finely-wrought blade with exceptionally long tang bearing two mekugi ana, the signature, CHIKUZEN NO KUNI NOBUKUNI SAKU, believed to be later. With bo-hi on either side at the spine, and fine, straight temperline and active hada, with a series of very subtle short, diagonal marks at the bo-hi on the right side. The shakudo mounts embellished with gold kikoman flanked by maple leaves, the tsuba with gold-inlaid border, heavily gilt menuki and tsuka wrapped in olive and rust ito. In its fine saya lacquered deep red with expanded tip and en suite kojiri. 1865 or earlier. Very slight wear to blade, saya with minor chips and cracks to koi. Overall length 142cm./ 55 7/8 inches. Nagasa 85.3cm./ 33 5/8 inches. Condition II
