Description
An exceptional example, made in Crete and likely named for the village in Heraklion. The flared elephant grips tapering continuously to the bolsters, with deeply-engraved silver tangband fitted with a pair of tweezers at the pommel. The straight, single-edged handwrought blade with characteristic upturned tip and etched panel with the date, 1913, the year of Cretan unification with Greece. The silver scabbard superbly embossed and engraved overall in the kalionji style, with alternating gilt and woven silver bands, treatments typically found on fine yataghans. Dated 1913. Overall length 35.5 cm. Bolsters with period repairs. Condition II
