Description
A rare example of classic form, with fibrous horn grips and mounts of gilt brass decorated in Ioannina. The broad, T-section blade exhibiting areas of actively-grained wootz pattern with gold-inlaid flowering vines at each side of the forte and at the expanded yelman or back edge. The leather covered wooden scabbard with mounts deeply embossed and engraved in Greek motifs, Christian, classical and nautical, including Christ Pantokrator supported by angels, St. Nicholas, St. James the Greater with a staff and sword, Jonah and two whales, pairs of mermaids and hippokamps, three Greek revolutionaries, a lion and eagle, and Constantinos XI Palaiologos, last emperor of Byzantium, in addition to other human, animal and mythological figures.
