Description
Lotuko (or Latuka) People, South Sudan. An object of both protection and prestige, of characteristic ovate form, composed of human hair combined with fine twine derived from tree bark and felted to form a thick, rigid padding. A series of beaten brass plates are stitched to the exterior periphery, leaving the crown exposed; this is decorated with large brass studs. A black feather ball fixed to the terminal through two holes completes the decoration. Mid-19th century.
