Description
A fine, early Persian or Indian trophy shield wrought of wootz with characteristic forged-in border decorated with bands of vinework, forms the core to which elaborate gilded and engraved mounts embellished with a fine, translucent green enamel have been applied, including seven ovate tabs, a large, circular boss and rim in characteristic Polish-Hungarian style. The surface is additionally enriched with 24 gilded studs, each set with five turquoises, in concentric rings. The reverse with a pair of bronze lugs set with rings for a leather grip. 17th century. One boss restored, some turquoises lacking. Strong influence from Ottoman prototypes in Polish and Hungarian arms was common during the 17th century. See Z.
