Description
In the style of a Roman gladius, the brass hilt with pommel modeled as an eagle head and grip as a fasces, or bound sheaves, symbols evoking Rome as the ideological predecessor to Fascism. With straight, double-edged blade. In its velvet covered wooden scabbard with brass mounts. Acquired by Sgt. Leslie James Moore (1918-1995,) British Eighth Army, during WWII, likely during the Italian Campaign. In addition to his duties as a soldier, Sgt. Moore is believed to have cooked for Field Marshall Bernard Montgomery; included in this lot is a photo of him with Field Marshall Montgomery. Second quarter of the 20th century Worn, guard dented, blade rusted. Overall length 70.5cm. Condition IV
