Description

The elegant grips with rolled pommel of highly-polished sardonyx, ranging in color from crimson to bands of cream. Sardonyx stone has been long popular with Hellenic craftsmen, its use dating to the Classical era. The grips contained in a fine silver frame, elaborately profiled and engraved in Baroque motifs, including shells and vinework, and set with a toggle ring at the pommel. The fine, robust Ottoman blade of considerable curvature, wrought of intricately-patterned Istanbul Baiaz (Istanbul White) wootz with backedge, engraved with a rectangular, gold-bordered cartouche containing the signature of the smith, WORK OF…; the name partially effaced as often encountered with captured blades. Latter 18th century. Grips with minor cracks and chips. Overall length 90.3cm. Condition IV
