Description
Likely made in the Royal Armories of Tipu Sultan at Mysore, the silver pommel fully-modeled as a finely-detailed tiger’s head popular during his reign (1782-1789 c.e.) The faceted grips of ebony with silver bosses, the guard wrought of black wootz damascus steel. The fine, moderately-curved blade of lenticular section, wrought of finely-patterned black Persian wootz damascus steel. In its silk-velvet-covered wooden scabbard with embossed, engraved and pierced silver locket depicting a tiger attacking an elephant among complex foliage, while the silvered chape depicts a tiger attacking a horse. Latter 18th century. Light wear, locket with minor loss, chape with period repair. Overall length 83.1cm. Condition III
