Description
Very finely mounted, the pommel, tangbands and guard of heavily gilded silver, uniquely embellished in European Neoclassical motifs involving floral sprays, acanthus leaves and scrolling vinework, with elephant grips. The exceptionally long, elegant, Zand Dynasty blade wrought of complex-patterned black Persian wootz damascus steel, with a series of narrow interrupted fullers along the spine and broad central fullers running to the acute tip. Inscribed at the right forte in two cartouches, SHAH AHMAD SULTAN 1221 (1806/7) and WORK OF KALB ‘ALI 1200 (1785/86) and the numerals 21, with RAST MIR (?) KHAN at the spine. In its leather-covered wooden scabbard with heavily gilded silver mounts embellished en suite with those of the hilt. Late 18th-early 19th century. Grips chipped, chape lacking tip, leather worn. Overall length 97.5cm. Condition III
