Description
The hilt comprising a grip of elephant, swelling from the fine silver guard with gilding and embellished with flowering vines in high relief, then narrowing gracefully into the pommel, carved as a fully-modeled lion’s head with eyes and mane finely delineated and teeth bared and holding a ring from which depends the original silk and gilt tassel. The fine, lightly-curved, hollowground blade wrought of dramatically-patterned Persian black wootz steel retaining most original finish and sharpness. In its tooled and gilded leather-covered wooden scabbard with silver suspension bands and chape decorated with flowering vinework in high relief en suite with the hilt. Mid-17th century. Minor checking to grip, gilded leather with losses and rubbing. Overall length 92cm. Condition III
