Description
A rare example of Tibetan workmanship, the guard and pommel of pierced and engraved iron, the pommel set with a coral, the round guard scalloped along the edge, the grip elaborately wrapped in silver wire. The characteristic blade straight, broad and single-edged with tapering tip, displaying the hairpin pattern-welded damascus construction typical of older examples. The wooden scabbard covered in rayskin on the obverse with intricately pierced and engraved iron frame, likewise enclosing a finely embossed and engraved panel to the obverse, together with a large, circular filigreed upper mount. Mid-18th-early 19th century. Overall length 51cm.
