Description

The mounts of antler, superbly carved throughout in Mannerist style displaying an exceptional and sculptural degree of relief. Included are the royal arms of France on the grip, comprising an oval escutcheon bearing three fleurs de lis, and surmounted by a kingly crown, interspersed with elaborate foliate panels. The scabbard embellished with detailed portraits of King Francois [Francis] II (r. 1559-1560,) King Charles IX (r.1560-174), King Henri III (e. 1574-1589,) and King Henri IV (e. 1589-1610,) with each name inscribed upon a billowing banner amongst foliage interspersed with bands embellished with geometrical motifs, the guard in the form of a pair of conjoined acanthus leaves. Mounted with a well-forged hollowground triangular armor-piercing blade retaining considerable original edge. Beginning of the 17th century or later. Very light wear, small chip and minor glue repair to pommel. Overall length 44cm. Condition III
