Description
A very rare detached shield plate attributable by its coat of arms and motto, superbly embossed and chased from a single large plate of brass, the broad border with intertwining thistles, the center with the arms of Seawright, comprising a shield depicting an eagle surmounted by a helmet supporting a crest composed of a hand gripping a winged lance surrounded by lightning bolts, the border with the Seawright motto on a scroll, DEUM TIMETE (Fear God.) Diameter 35cm. Light wear, minor dents. The Seawrights (originally Sievewright, and changed by immigrants to the American Colonies to Searight) are noted in historical documents as early as 1688.
