Made at Ioannina, the distinctive hilt with elephant grips incised with a laurel wreath for victory and palm leaves symbolizing the triumph of martyrdom. The rolled silver pommel and broad guard, terminating in scallop shells, the sign of St. James, beloved of Christ and martyr, embossed and engraved with neoclassical motifs and intact knucklechain. The fine heirloom Ottoman blade dating to the early 17th c., wrought of distinctive Ottoman wootz, quite broad and of characteristic curvature, with raised yelman or backedge, and replete with gold Ottoman inscriptions, including the signature of the noted smith AMAL KALB ALI (Work of Kalb Ali) and the gold inlay artist, ALI MAJLI ISFAHANI (Ali Majli [?] of Isfahan.) In its leather-covered wooden scabbard with large silver mounts embossed and engraved in neoclassical motifs en suite with the hilt. Latter 18th c. Minor wear. Overall length 93.2cm. Condition II
