Description
Of classic form for the period, carved from a whole cowhorn, the distal end capped with wood, set with a steel loop for a suspension band and fixed in place with nails. The proximal end carved with a series of bands and a faceted, tapering terminal. The body incised with geometrical designs including imbrications and cusped and beaded borders, together with a Maltese cross and DAN’L CAIN / HIS HORN. Second half of the 18th c. Well worn and patinated. Daniel Cain, born c. 1750 in Virginia or North Carolina, died c. 1851, Ohio, was an American patriot who fought in the Revolutionary War, serving four years in the North Carolina Militia in the environs of Greenboro, North Carolina. He lived over 100 years and was interred on his farm in Greene County, Ohio and iscommemorated with a Revolutionary War plaque. For further information, see: D. C.
