Description
A fine example of early Qajar Dynasty work, the steel hilt with lobate pommel and guard of characteristic form displaying curled quillons with monsterhead terminals, engraved overall with commemorative portraits of Shah Abbas on each side. The fine blade long, broad and lightly curved, finely fullered with expanded tip developing into a pronounced back edge, and forged of actively-grained Persian Kara Khorassan black wootz damascus steel, with inlaid gold cartouche at the right forte giving the name and titles of Shah Abbas of Iran, ABBAS SHAH BANDE-YE VILAYET. The wooden scabbard with tooled leather covering and steel suspension bands chiseled and en suite with the hilt. Early 19th century. Minor areas of pitting to forte. Overall length 89cm. Condition II
