Description
Qajar era, comprising a highly embellished helmet, body plates, armguard and battleaxe, each etched with scenes from Persian history and inlaid with silver, and a coat of mail. The helmet of characteristic hemispherical form with elongated top spike, adjustable nasal bar and plume tubes, with camail intact, embellished with intertwining cartouches depicting Persian nobles and heroes at court, with broad borders containing Quranic inscriptions heightened with silver. The rare waistcoat-type body armor composed of five profiled and hinged plates etched overall with finely-detailed nobles hunting a variety of beasts and birds with inlay, encircled by cartouches containing Quranic calligraphy retaining traces of silver. The bazuband raised from a single plate and etched overall with scenes of heroes and nobles in battle. The double-headed axe likewise embellished with Persian mythological and heroic characters, with steel shaft. The mail coat wrought of butted steel rings. Mid-19th century. Worn overall, minor losses to mail. Length of mail coat 76.5 cm. Mannequin and gambeson not included. Condition III
