Description
An exceptional example, the mounts characteristic of the eyalat (Ottoman province) of Damascus, with characteristic polished and studded horn grips, the steel guard, tangbands and pommel lavishly inlaid in complex geometrical and vinework motifs in gold on one side and silver on the other. The massive Persian blade finely fullered and skillfully-wrought of dramatically-patterned black wootz, and lavishly inlaid with fine gold panels at each forte, the obverse with chiseled cartouche reading, O JUDGE OF NEEDS! and another with, WORK OF ASSAD ALLAH, together with a lengthy quotation from the Qur’an running the entire length of the obverse fuller in gold, and further geometrical panels at the spine and back edge, likewise in gold. In its velvet-covered wooden scabbard with steel mounts lavishly inlaid in gold on one side and silver on the other fine en suite with the hilt. Mid-19th century. Light wear. Overall length 96cm.
