Of characteristic form, well-wrought with bifurcate blade, long, broad spike with central ridge and pronounced hook, with cheekstraps intact. The Roman numerals XVI cut into one edge, indicating the 16th Regiment of Foot. On its octagonal hardwood haft. Second half of the 18th century. Haft possibly replaced, later shortened. Overall length 150cm. The 16th Regiment of Foot saw considerable service during the American Revolution. It was headquartered in Pensacola, saw action in New York in 1776, and also fought the Spanish in Georgia in1778, the French in 1779, and again in 1781. It returned to England in 1782, where it was renamed the Buckinghamshire Regiment of Foot. Condition III
