Description
A rare example of Savafid-era work, the later ebony grips with rolled pommel, the guard and tangband of characteristic form inlaid with gold. The fine, broad blade of shallow curvature with elegant taper toward the tip, forged of very fine Persian Kara Taban wootz, with a cartouche at the right forte reading, WORK OF SADIQ and a pronounced hardened edge running along the cutting edge and tip. First half of the 17th century. Grips replaced in working life, wear to blade. A Persian smith of this name is identified in L.A. Meyer, Islamic Armourers and Their Works, 1962, Geneva: Albert Kundig, p. 71 Plate XVI. Overall length 96.5cm. Condition III
