Description
Northern Greek work, of classic form, the grip of octagonal section composed of panels of shirmani and horn, and embellished with tiny inlaid brass and horn rondels and alternating rows of coral and mother of pearl, the bolsters, blade reinforces and grip bands of finely engraved silver. The handwrought, single-edged blade with fine profiling to the spine and an inlaid silver panel in Ottoman reading, OWNER TASOGIAN AFANDI. The leather-covered scabbard with large silver mounts finely engraved in neoclassical motifs and bearing a later inscription, OWNER BARMALIK MEHMED AGHA 1241 (1825/6 C.E.) The chape terminating in a characteristic stylized dolphin head with coral eyes. Dated 1825/6. Blade age darkened, inlay rubbed. Overall length 31.5cm. A very rare example of a titled Greek name inscribed in Ottoman during the War of Independence era. Condition II
